The whole green office movement has rocketed in recent years and environmental management systems aimed at reducing the ecological footprint and greenhouse gas emissions of office spaces are now commonplace. There is even a special week dedicated to it. Green Office Week, running from 14-18 May, aims to build awareness of the five Rs – refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle and emphasises that we can all do a bit more to improve our green credentials.
How can your office become greener?
The chances are that if you are trying to create a greener office, one of the first areas you might think about is paper products. Choosing recycled instead of virgin paper will have a positive environmental impact, saving trees, energy, water and landfill space and protecting forests around the world. Any complaints and you might like to remind co-workers that over 100 million trees are cut down each year just to supply the paper industry in the USA alone!
So where does office coffee come into it?
One simple change you might not have considered but which will immediately enhance your green credentials by having a direct impact on rainforests and endangered eco-systems is choosing PURO Fairtrade coffee.
A unique collaboration between our coffee partner Miko, the specialist Belgian roaster and the World Land Trust sees profits from the sale of every bag of Puro coffee directed back into conserving the very habitat that conceived it, restoring habitats, reintroducing lost species and reinvigorating the land, where coffee is grown under the shade of native trees.
So although money might not grow on trees, the money raised through this initiative certainly helps grow trees. So far Puro has saved 32,030 acres of rainforest and created 11 Puro rainforest reserves in 8 coffee producing countries across Central and South America, and Asia.
Making a switch to Puro means you are doing your bit to stop the exploitation of coffee growers, helping to ensure fair prices for farmers and saving the rainforests and endangered species within coffee producing countries.
It’s great to know that the simple step of switching coffee brands can have such a powerful impact on the world’s poorest third world countries, the local communities and the generations to follow.
